- Actually, using the term "Baud Rate" is wrong. Stick with "bits per
- second" (bps), or "cycles per second" (cps). Baud Rate is something
- altogether different. A 14.4 modem is one that can communicate with
- another modem at 14,400 bits per second. This is the DCE (data
- communications equipment) rate. Your modem can transfer data to and
- from your computer at a much higher rate. This is the DTE (data
- terminal equipment) rate. Assuming your modem supports the v.42bis/MNP
- 5 compression protocol. 19.2 would be the speed of transfer between
- modem and computer. This is the lowest setting you should use. If your
- comm program allows a selection of 14.4, don't use it. I would suggest
- using a setting of 57,600 if your serial port uses an 16550 UART. If
- it uses an 16450 UART then select 38,400 and if an 8250 UART, then
- don't go higher than 19,200.
-
- If this is all greek to you, you can find plenty of good info on the
- Web about serial communications. Just go to one of the various search
- engines and you'll be overwhelmed with info. Try here for a little
- more info on the UART.

- But don't believe *everything* you read. The problem with the
- Internet is that there are too many *instant* experts spreading bogus
- information. Who knows, I may be one of them, but I try not to be.
-
- Good luck,
- Eric
